Chapter 20

Shannon’s apartment at least was small but cozy. Rather she had made it cozy. It wasn’t much, but it was all she could afford after sending most of her paychecks home. The price of freedom she had once told herself. Now she wasn’t so sure. Her mother had intentionally kept her in poverty. There was no way her father would cross her path that way. In a twisted way she could get it. There was a scuffle between a demon and an angel. Her mother paid the price for the scuffle, only to be cursed with a demon’s daughter. Did her mother hate her? It was hard to fathom that wasn't a feeling her mother had towards her.

All she wanted to do was curl up and enjoy a sad movie, something that reflected the conflict within her. But it wasn’t to be. She looked out the window of her apartment to the street below. Several figures were walking up the street. They were clad in monk’s robes. She pulled the phone out of her pocket and dialed her mother’s number as she watched them approach.

“Shannon?” her mother said with relief.

“Tell me mom,” she said in an oddly calm voice, “Did you ever love me? Or was I just a constant reminder of what he did to you?”

“Shannon,” her mother sighed. “It’s not like that.”

“Then how is it?” Shannon asked. “Cause I see three monks coming towards my apartment, and I don’t think they want to talk.”

“I tried to love you,” her mother said softly. “But even as a teenager I could see the evil in you.”

“What evil?” she asked as pain laced her heart. “I just wanted to be a good person. That’s all I ever wanted.”

“But that’s not what is in your blood.”

“The angel blood or the demon blood?” she asked. “Cause I hear you're touched too. Did you ever consider that that might temper it out? Or did you just see the man who betrayed you?”

“I’m sorry Shannon,” her mother said in sudden resolve. “I tried to keep you safe.”

“Good bye mother,” Shannon said and hung up.

The three monks coming her way had noted her watching them on the third floor window. They moved faster. She pulled out Zaru’s card and dialed the number.

“This is Zaru.”

“Hi, it’s Shannon.”

“Shannon, darling, how are you doing? I heard you dad was in town.”

“Yeah, I met him.”

“How did it go?”

“Well enough. Listen, I went home to let things sink in but apparently my mother sent angels after me. I don’t have Damien or Ebron’s numbers. Could you call them for me?”

“There are angels at your apartment?”

“I can hear them coming up the stairs,.” she said as she suddenly felt the reality of the situation. “Please, Zaru, get my father.”

She hung up as the door flung open. The two leaders were no longer in robes. They had flung back the brown wool to reveal silver armor that seemed to shimmer in the artificial light. They each had swords that were almost imaginable in size.
